SRINAGAR: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has postponed his visit to Jammu & Kashmir, ex-union minister SaifuddinSoz said on Tuesday.

Soz, who is also the state Congress chief, said the visit would be rescheduled without elaborating.

The PM was scheduled to arrive in Srinagar for a two-day visit on June 25. He was to inaugurate the 11-km long Pir Panchal railway tunnel connecting Banihal in Jammu with Qazigund in the Valley.

Singh was reportedly scheduled to inaugurate the Mughal Road connecting Shopian in Kashmir with Poonch in Jammu. But the project is yet to be completed and seven important bridges on the route are yet to be constructed.

The work on the road had begun in 2005 and was scheduled to be completed in five years.

Chief minister Omar Abdullah had made preparations to convince the PM to release more funds for developmental work during the visit.

Separately, Jammu & Kashmir Liberation Front chairman Yasin Malik had called for a complete shutdown to protest the PM’s visit. Other separatist leader, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, had endorsed the call.
