The construction of an oil refinery plant worth USD 1.3 billion will be built in northern Jawzjan province of Afghanistan.

Ahmad Rateb Popal, chief of Watan Group told reporters on Wednesday that the oil refinery plant will be built in Sheberghan city of Jawzjan province.

Mr. Rateb further added that the construction work of the oil refinery plant has been finalized with a Chinese firm.

He said the main reason behind the construction of oil refinery which will be built in Jaraqdoq area, is to boost the oil refinery up to 6,000 barrels a day.

According to Rateb, a power generation system will also be installed besides the construction of an oil refinery plant which will have a capacity of producing up to 50 mega watt of electricity.

He said the installation of power generation will resolve the issue of Shebarghan residents from the shortage of electricity.

Afghanistan is estimated to have $3 trillion worth of mineral deposits, which through years of insecurity have remained unexploited.  Gold, iron ore, copper ore, emeralds, lapis, rubies as well as natural gas are all found in the north of the country.

Afghan government will be first in line to exploit the nearly 3 trillion dollars of resources lying in its hills and mountains if Afghanistan’s security does improve.

It’s hoped that the mining sector could become one of the Afghan economy’s strongest assets.
