Justice Delayed Is Justice Denied

A seven years old girl, Zainab had gone to tuition center but didn’t return, her parents had gone to Saudi Arabia to perform Umrah and the girl was living with her Aunts. Zainab was raped, murdered and thrown in the garbage in Kasur. Unfortunately, she was another victim of Kasur dirty legacy. Yes, it was the same Kasur where a huge child porn and child abuse scandal was exposed.

I have seen the CCTV footage of this heart-wrenching incident on TV, the way Zainab is holding the finger and walking frankly, criminals seems to be a very familiar person to the child. It was someone who knew her and someone who knew her tuition schedule as well as the fact that her parents were not in town. It could be a relative from the tuition place. The relatives and her neighbors should be investigated in this case.

The Punjab province has witnessed a steep rise in rape cases during the last few years. The surge in violence against women is quite common in this province where most of the female victims don’t report the crime to the police either because of their family background or due to influential perpetrators. According to legal experts, the delay in reporting of rape cases “in fact helps criminals” because forensic evidences are lost. They say that the existing criminal justice system discourages rape victims and benefits perpetrators only.

Pakistan, a Muslim country, is among the 10 worst countries when it comes to rape cases. Is humanity doomed in this country? Shouldn’t we be ashamed of such cases? According to a report released by War against Rape that at least four women are raped every day in Pakistan. Last year, the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) documented at least 2,446 cases of violence against women in the country, including 958 rapes and 158 cases of attacks in which victims were either set on fire or attacked with acid.

We cannot put our kids into locks. The system of injustice should be changed. When injustice becomes a law, resistance becomes a duty. This is a test case for Government of Pakistan, Judiciary, and civil society. Supreme Court should take suo moto notice against the culprits. Prompt and speedy justice is needed to set things right. The person who did this should be publicly stoned to death to set an example. Every Pakistani should raise his voice until Zainab get justice. May justice prevail and the animals accountable face dire consequences.
