Facebook launches Events app, latest grab for users’ time

SAN FRANCISCO — Facebook is launching a new Events app that it says will banish FOMO (the fear of missing out) forever.

More than 100 million people use Facebook every day to discover things they can do with friends — 650 million people use Facebook Events each month — and hundreds of millions of events are shared on Facebook every year, the giant social network says.

The debut of an Events app is yet another step by Facebook to insert itself onto your mobile phone and into your daily activities. The more time you spend on Facebook, the more data it can collect and the more ads it can show you.

It’s unclear if there’s demand for a separate Events app. Many people are reluctant to download yet another app on their phones.

Events is available starting Friday in the App Store for iPhone users in the U.S. and is coming soon to Android, Facebook says.

How it works:

When you open the Events app, you can scan events your friends are interested in, events from pages you like and updates from events you’ve already signed up for.

You can also browse event recommendations based on your interests, the location and the time of day. The calendar keeps track of all the events you are attending.

Your activities will be visible on Facebook so your friends can see events you have shared with them, even if they don’t have the app, Facebook said.
