Burhan killed in encounter in South Kashmir


Top ranking commander of Hizbul Mujahideen Burhan Wani has been killed in an encounter in Verinag area of South Kashmir.

Inspector General of Police Kashmir zone S J M Gillani told Rising Kashmir that Burhan was killed in an encounter along with three other militants in Verinag area of South Kashmir. “More details will follow” he said.

Burhan has been most wanted militant commander of Hizbul Mujahideen and has been putting police and para military forces on tenter hooks for long time.

The toll of civilians shot dead in police and forces’ firing in south Kashmir has mounted to 15, as more injured succumbed to injuries at SMHS hospital in Srinagar during past night, officials said.Police opened fire to break up a demonstration in Murran chowk Pulwama, critically injuring a civilian, identified as Irfan Ahmad Malik of Nehama.An official said that Malik succumbed to injuries at a hospital.The deceased civilians were identified as Saqib Manzoor Mir of Khundru, Achabal; Khurshid Ahmed of Harwat, Kulgam; Safeer Ahmed Bhat of Chararigam; Adil Bashir of Dooru; Abdul Hameed Mouchi of Arwani; Danish Ayoub Shah of Achabal; Jehangir Ahmed Ganie of Hassanpora, Bijbehera; Azad Hussain of Shopian; Aijaz Ahmed Thokur of Siligam, Anantnag; Muhammad Ashraf Dar of Halpora, Kokernag; Showkat Ahmed Mir of Hassanpora, Bijbehara; Haseeb Ahmad Ganai S/O Abdul Majid of Batpora-Khanabal, and Zubair Ahmad of Kaimoh.Meanwhile, report from south Kashmir said that an ambulance driver ferrying civilians injured in forces’ firing was badly beaten by CRPF troopersin Anantnag last night.Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Asgar Hussain Samoon told reporters that curfew has been imposed in the entire valley from midnight to maintain law and order. He also appealed to the people to help authorities maintain peace.
