US to send 30 Russian Helicopters to Afghanistan

Russia’s state-run arms trader announced US has purchased an additional 30 new military-use MI-17 helicopters for Afghanistan.

Rosoboronexport, Russia’s state-run arms trader, Monday announced the US has purchased an additional 30 new military-use MI-17 helicopters for Afghanistan.

Alexander Mikheev, Vice President of Rosoboronexport, said they signed a deal with the US to send an additional 30 new military-use MI-17 helicopters” to equip Afghanistan’s counter-terrorism forces,

The contract signed between the US Defense Department and Russian Rosoboronexport is worth 500 million dollars.

The US would like to leave an army strong enought to fight Taliban following its withdrawal, according to Russian experts.

The US Army had one $367.5 million contract to buy 21 Russian-made MI-17 helicopters for the Afghans from Rosoboronexportin 2011.
