You Dare not Insult Britain, Mr. Zardari

Submitted by BZ on August 7, 2010 – 9:21 am32 Comments

AHMED QURAISHI

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan—There is a reason why our President Asif Ali Zardari is in England without an invitation from the British government and despite the insults. The latest one came just yesterday, when Mr. Cameron gave BBC another sugar-coated spin on Pakistan’s alleged double game, timed to preempt his informal dinner meeting with Mr. Zardari.

In Mr. Zardari’s company, the British premier is in safe hands. You see, no Pakistani politician can dare alienate Britain. Pakistan is probably the only nation in the world whose ruling elite has more roots in London than in Islamabad. Our politicians rely on London to find a safe haven for their loot after every stint in power [Mr. Zardari is the first one to make a foray into America for this purpose, in addition to London]. This is where many of them maintain their assets and their private lives. And it is London [along with Washington] that often steps in to help them back into power. [Exhibit A: the infamous US-UK-Musharraf deal that shaped the incumbent Pakistani political (dis)system.]

What Pakistani politician would dare criticize Britain, even after a major insult? It is unfair to criticize Mr. Zardari alone. Do we think Mr. Rehman Malik would do it? He has property and business in London. Do we think Mr. Nawaz Sharif would do it? Do we think Mr. Asfandyar Wali would do it?

Where is, by the way, Mr. Wali, ANP’s godfather and the self-styled ‘linguistic’ leader [so many of them in Pakistan] when an important part of our homeland the Pakhtun Khwa province faces a horrendous humanitarian crisis?

Let me guess: London? Oops.

Our president is in England not because he was invited and had to go. According to the British media, he is there to launch his son’s career. This impression is strengthened by a statement from another Zardari loyalist announcing that president’s elder daughter is also ready to enter ‘practical politics’. And it’s stunning how the British media is probing this anomaly while our own Pakistani media is generally silent on this aspect of the visit. There’s no one here to ask the question: Why launch your offspring’s political careers in London and not in Islamabad or Larkana, for example? Is it because Larkana, where four Bhuttos are buried, is an example of neglect and stagnation despite four stints in power by the party that rules in that city’s name?

The British prime minister must be having a hard time taking Mr. Zardari’s ‘official’ visit seriously. After all, here’s a man whose political survival depends on London’s goodwill. He knows it. British government knows it. This is the same Britain that played a crucial role alongside Washington in shaping the incumbent ruling coalition in Pakistan and helped it survive in the face of a suspicious military establishment.

Pakistanis expecting Mr. Zardari to counter Mr. Cameron’s anti-Pakistan remark are expecting too much. He is launching his son’s career – to rule Pakistan – in England, for God’s sake.

So much for our dyslexic democrats and the ‘masoom; nation which returns them into power again and again. I think we deserve this as Allah has promised us the kind of rulers we merit.
    So be it

      Agreed.

Our nation seems to be in deep sleep, why?

It has faced the severest of adversities in its 60+ year history with great strength and patience. Is their patience endless?

It is the vindictive politics which forces people to run away.Dakait are after the lives of other Dakaits.

Mush too was hounded with Article 6,though politician do not admit that they create the conditions for Army to take over. One can see what is happening currently. The whole nation wants Kayani to act.

I am surprised why Ahmed Qureshi has included Musharraf in this diagram, just to show his impartiality?

In two sentences you have summarized the caliber of Pakistani politicians and their politics. There is no need write a book on it. Well done

      * Regarding article 6 – Applied only for the 3rd Nov, 2007 scenario which was a mini martial law in his capacity as Army Chief. ‘Emergency Rule’ was the fancy name given to legitimise it, it was basically his last act of defiance to save his ‘kursi’. The 1999 Coup was claimed to adhere to the ‘doctrine of state necessity’ and many senior judges went along with Musharraf, even though the US fully endorsed the military coup and infact this coup had been planned in the early summer (when Kargil hostilities ended). The ‘DoN’ is actually a farce, Nigeria’s constitutional crisis of 1999 is another example. The Judiciary was not independant at all and this is sad.

      * Yes politicans do create circumstances for the Army to intervene but the Army doesn’t have to go to those lengths – What Gen Kiyani is doing now should have been done a long time ago by other senior generals, i.e The army protecting the constitution and controlling government from behind the scenes. Sorry to say, but all our Generals have been power hungry despots and always engineered circumstances to take power albeit with tacit support from an imperial power such as the US. I don’t want to go into details, i’m sure if one is interested they can read about it.

      * The status quo should be protected and Gen Kiyani will not assume power, no matter what happens – hence the extension in tenure so he may keep a close vigil on the civilian set up and ensure they behave themselves. Gen Kiyani KNOWS the prestige of the Army institution will suffer and he has worked extremely hard day and night to restore this pride – he would not let this hard work go down the drain. Hence, the ISI had Musharraf removed a few years ago because he had become a liability due to some of his policies vis a vis the US.

I enjoy discussing with you but you never seem to pass a comment. Have i offended you my dear brother? I’m a human being, ek galttiyon ka putla hun and if i have i apologise profusely. However, if you would like to communicate sometime, my email is ali_alamzeb@hotmail.com – take great care, i wish you well. Allah Hafiz o Nasir.

With all due respect, I disagree.

There have been many a revolution in the world that have gone sour. Dreams turned into nightmares and nightmares into horrible reality of yet more deaths and destruction caused by the very leaders chosen by the masses to help fulfill that dream.

The quotation is from a bygone era and may have been true then. This is an era in which spin doctors have more sway over a government than those who can genuinely bring peace and prosperity to people; an era of ‘thought police’; Terrorism Acts, police states . The BIG BOTHER era.

The quotation whilst fine and noble in intention will be confined to the history of a past so distance that it has blurred out of sight.

Gandhi, was a great leader and in the eyes of many and he will remain that to eternity.

Cameron told plain truth implicating the Pakistani military, which is based on hard facts and can not be disputed by Pakistan….. the Pakistanis know that…… but they did not want to hear it from one of their masters and close associates…. !

Pakistan has a long history of benefiting from Britain’s all round support on most key issues concerning economics, commerce, defense and diplomacy, vis a vis India.

This article also explains other reasons that makes it almost impossible for the Pakistanis to retaliate against Britain for any perceived insult resulting from Cameron’s statement.

Pakistan simply can not afford to lose Britain as one of its sources of strength…… or how else would it fight India …….. ?

    • AG says:

do you know where you are talking from.

    • Striver says:

      NEEL123: CORRECTION:

It’s the leaders who cannot afford to loose ANY western support.

The resourceful Pakistani masses can easliy bring their country out of the mess created by the political elite. But the political elite is parasitical and hard to remove unless the masses came out on the streets in an itifada like protest.

      • neel123 says:

        @ Striver,

Jingoistic attitude aside, how many days will Pakistan last without the support of the Anglo-American masters ……. ?

Right from day one, Pakistan survived on the support of the Anglo-Americans…….without the American dollars Pakistan will collapse like a house of cards in a matter of weeks……….your political leaders know that very well ……….. !

Retarded hindu.. Britian didn’t help paksitan to build nuclear weapons nor we build FJ17 fighters to kick you ass with the help of britian. Britian is falsly thinking they can rely on cockroaches to get support for its economy.

      • neel123 says:

        @ Salman,

Pakistan’s JF 17 and nukes will not save it from diasaster ……… as Bhutto said ….. you Pakistanis are not far away from eating grass ( and spare parts of the nukes & Jf 17s) …. how long can you beg for international help ( as your leaders are doing now) ….. ?

  • John Bijou says:

Its amazing isnt it ? How the very corrupt Pak politicians recieve safe haven of their loot in Londonistan while the Am-Brit leaders then turn around and lecture Pakistanis of how we are not democratic or export terrorism ? Cameron failed to mention of how the same infamous ISI helped torture British citizens on behalf of the MI5 and MI6 ?

Its exis of evil but the Am-Brits never unveil the entire debauchry, they only let in on the part of it to make Pak look bad in its enirety but never the whole or full story !!

This neo-colonialism needs to end ….period!
